The Gryphon was thought to be the king of all creatures - a combination of an Eagle, the king of the birds, and a Lion, the king of the beasts. They are typically guarding treasures, and are a symbol of the divine.

It's also thought that Gryphons mated for life, and when one Gryphon passes away, the other never remarries. Their feathers were thought to cure blindness, their claws to have medicinal properties, and their eggs were sought out as absolute treasures!
